Quality standards in Animal Welfare Education

In May 2010 "Tierschutz macht Schule" organised a restricted workshop on quality standards in animal welfare education together with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, the DG SANCO and the "Erna-Graff-Stiftung für Tierschutz" (Berlin).

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • an appraisal of established and successful programs dealing with International Animal Welfare Education
  • a survey of demand for quality standards in European Animal Welfare Education,
  • the definition of a way to sustainably secure quality standards in European Animal Welfare Education with regard to different conditions among European countries and
  • the definition of basic requirements for the implementation of a European Animal Welfare Education Network

During two days, the partcipants looked at existing AWE-programs and -methods and compared the similarities and differences of animal welfare education between countries.
Key subjects of AWE-programs, different target groups and corresponding strategies of knowledge transfer were discussed.

First steps towards a European Animal Welfare Education Network were taken.
