International Conference on Animal Welfare Education

On the 1st and 2nd of October 2010 the 1st International Conference on Animal Welfare Education organised by the DG SANCO took place in Brussels.

The number of participants (about 380 persons from all over the world) reflected the high demand of international cooperation in this area.
Animal welfare education can be seen as the basis for a societal change when it comes to the treatment of animals. Often it is not cruelty that leads to the suffering of animals but the lack of knowledge about their needs and behaviour.

At the conference issues such as science and values, methodologies of animal welfare education and relevant target groups were discussed. The speakers and participants shared their experiences and the importance of a European Network for Animal Welfare Education was highlighted.

Mag. Marie-Helene Scheib gave a speech about animal welfare education for children and the youth and presented the work and outcomes of "Tierschutz macht Schule" to the audience.

On the second day several animal welfare education institutions (including "Tierschutz macht Schule") presented themselves at the exhbition. Many participants came in order to get to know the different initiatives and to exchange ideas.

Mag. Marie-Helene Scheib and DI Monika Hametter from "Tierschutz macht Schule" are members of the steering-committee that contributed to the organisation of the conference.

The following paper of "Tierschutz macht Schule" and the "Erna-Graff-Stifung für Tierschutz"  about animal welfare education for children and the youth was published in the proceedings of the conference:
